What is there to say about Dr. Strange? There’s probably going to be little in here that hasn’t been said elsewhere, but I have an essay to write so naturally I’m finding literally any other thing to do first.
If you’re unfamiliar with the cast of Dr. Strange in the comics, there will be a spoiler. If you’ve seen the movie, and didn’t sit through both credit scenes, there will be spoilers.
[End of Disclaimers]
Well, the following isn’t hyperbole by the way, it’s objective fact – Dr. Strange is one of the best Marvel (and superhero) movies out to date, and certainly the best origin story since Iron Man. The movie has stayed faithful to the source material to the point there really hasn’t been any updating. Strange is still an arrogant neurosurgeon – but in that traditional arsehole not-like-Tony-Stark arrogant way. He’s not lovable because of it.
The special effects are really something else, I saw a tweet the other day describing the film’s SFX as Inception meets M.C. Escher, which is pretty much nail-on-head. (And apologies - I can’t remember who gave that description).
Benedict Cumberbatch plays the role well, as does Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The villain is standard run of the mill, wants-to-destory the world, but it works, it doesn’t feel boring or contrived. It’s nice to see Mordo before he turns evil, and if we get to see Mordo has the villain in the sequel, he’ll probably be the most interesting bad guy since Loki, given that he has motivations that aren’t “I want to destory/rule the world/the Avengers”.
The Eye of Agamotto is of course the time Infinity Stone (Gem) – which is confirmed at the close of the movie – so we can see how this will tie the character into Infinity War. It’s also used to beat the bad guy in an interesting way, it’s very Dr Who/Reed Richards vs Galactus, and probably one of the more interesting victories we’ve seen from the MCU.
There is off course plenty of nods for fans of the source material via name drops, symbols and items. The Wand of Watoomb (which I’m pretty sure Wong is using at the end), Drumm (Brother Vodoo), Living Tribunal, and more that I’m forgetting
Anyway, it’s definitely worth going to see.
And staying until the very end of the credits.
